The Neuro-Visual Shift
Traditional talk therapy, counselling, and standard executive coaching share a critical, hidden structural flaw, i.e. they rely entirely on top-down cognitive processing.
When you ask an open-ended question like “What is causing your stress right now?” or “How is your communication style affecting your relationship?”, you are making a massive cognitive demand. The client’s brain must simultaneously access deep memory banks, regulate intense emotional states, filter out sensory background noise, and organize raw neural input into a structured, linear sentence.
While this maybe the standard processing, for individuals navigating professional burnout, profound sensory overload or ADHD, this linguistic demand creates an insurmountable barrier. The cognitive load spikes, triggering:
- Analysis Paralysis: The brain spins trying to choose the “perfect” words.
- Masking or Compliant Text: The client repeats intellectualized catchphrases rather than sharing their authentic, felt reality.
- Total Autonomic Shutdown: The client goes blank, silent, or becomes detached from the session.
When the brain’s executive processing capacity is completely maxed out, language fails. Hence, we cannot continue demanding language first. We must switch to a bottom-up visual approach.
By using associative card systems, specifically the Resilio (stress and resilience) and Tandoo (relationship dynamics) decks from the OH Cards family, we can externalize complex, overwhelming internal states into concrete, manageable visual maps.
The Neurological Case for Bottom-Up Metaphor Processing
When a client selects an abstract image card or sits it next to an associative word frame, their subconscious makes a rapid, unedited association. Why does this work so cleanly when traditional dialogue stalls?

1. Radically Reduced Working Memory Load
Pre-made visual illustrations remove the immediate pressure of semantic retrieval. The client does not have to invent a vocabulary description from scratch. Instead, they scan an open array of cards and find a match for their current internal state. This reduces executive friction, freeing up mental bandwidth for genuine processing.
2. Safeguarding Against Rejection-Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD)
Individuals who are sensitive, facing burnout, extreme stress or person with ADHD frequently experience acute Rejection-Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), an extreme emotional sensitivity to perceived criticism, judgment, or personal failure. Looking directly at a coach and explaining why they “snapped” at a partner feels inherently unsafe.
However, projecting that dynamic onto a Tandoo card creates vital psychological distance. The client is no longer defending their personal character; they are simply describing an external object on the table.
3. Precision Interoceptive Mapping
Many neurodivergent adults experience atypical interoception, the internal sensory system that reads physical signals like heart rate, muscle tension, or emotional saturation. They might feel completely fine until they suddenly collapse into an explosive meltdown or deep depressive fatigue.
Using nature-based or abstract imagery allows the brain to map complex physical or cognitive burdens accurately long before the speech centers can articulate them.
Aligning Associative Cards with ICF Core Competencies
Using OH Cards in a professional setting is not a casual parlor game or a fortune-telling trick; it is a highly rigorous, structured modality that directly satisfies the strictest ICF Core Competency Markers. For example:
- Competency 4: Maintains Presence (Marker 4.4): The practitioner allows the client’s internal pacing, somatic responses, and choice of imagery to completely dictate the flow of the session, entirely abandoning a rigid, coach-led agenda.
- Competency 6: Active Listening (Marker 6.3): The coach synthesises what is not being said, using the physical layout, empty spaces, and visual connections between cards to reflect deeper structural truths back to the client.
- Competency 7: Evokes Awareness (Marker 7.4): By using spatial perspective shifts, such as moving from the first-person view of a stressor to a third-person neutral observer, the coach systematically guides the client to look beyond their current, fixed way of thinking.
- Competency 8: Facilitates Client Growth (Marker 8.1): Transforming an expansive visual metaphor into a single, highly specific, low-energy micro-action ensures that accountability is neurodivergent-friendly and structurally achievable.
Application: The “Body Double” Stress Translation
To demonstrate this system in practice, we have designed a neuro-visual protocol: The “Body Double” Stress Translation Activity.

This advanced framework is engineered specifically for clients dealing with workplace burnout, or high sensory overload, neurodivergent relationship strain. It uses the Resilio deck to map the client’s internal physical load and cognitive traps, and the Tandoo deck to build a visible “communication bridge” to help them safely identify relational friction points.
To prevent the common “shame loops” that cause anxiety/ burnout brains to lock up when standard action plans fail, the activity features advanced, trauma-informed contingency protocols: The External Witness Zoom-Out and The “Scrap It” Reset. These options give the client absolute, empowering authority over the session’s direction.
