Behind the Mask: Is Your Inner Critic Running the Show? Where Is Your Inner Ally?

What functional mask(s) are we wearing?

We look capable, responsible, reliable, the one people count on.

But beneath that capable exterior, is there a voice constantly telling us to work harder, do more, and never let anyone down?

Many of us wear masks that help us function in daily life. The high achiever… helper… fixer… strong one.

These masks are not the problem. Rather, often, they began as solutions.

The challenge is that over time, they can become exhausting to maintain.

Behind many masks sits an Inner Critic quietly fuelling stress, perfectionism, people-pleasing, overworking, or avoidance.

What is happening?

We often see people who appear successful on the outside but feel depleted on the inside.

Not because they lack resilience.

Not because they lack skill.

But because they have spent years listening to an Inner Critic that never quite feels satisfied.

The Inner Critic can sound like:

  • “You should be doing more.”
  • “Don’t let anyone down.”
  • “If you slow down, everything will fall apart.”
  • “You must get this right.”

Over time, these messages shape the masks we wear.

The achiever, caretaker, perfectionist, peacekeeper, strong one.

While these roles may help us succeed, they can also disconnect us from our needs, emotions, and authentic self.

What can we do?

That is why Behind the Mask: From Inner Critic to Inner Ally, our 4-part reflective workshop series combines Persona, Personita, COPE Cards and Positive Intelligence principles.

Participants will be:

  • identifying the masks they wear ✓
  • recognising the Inner Critic behind those masks ✓
  • understanding their coping patterns ✓
  • challenging limiting beliefs ✓
  • strengthening their Inner Ally ✓
  • practising new responses grounded in clarity and self-awareness ✓

What are we trying?

The goal is not to get rid of the mask.

The goal is to understand what it protects, what it costs, and what support is needed for it to soften.

Because growth is not becoming someone new.

Growth and transformation is reconnecting with who you already are beneath the pressure.
