Is Psychology Study Your Calling?

Hey there! Picture this: A 16 years old, struck with an ingenious idea that pursuing the field of psychology studies would be pretty cool. A simple me just believe that it meant I can learn to help people, and dive deep into the human mind. With this thought, off I went, thinking I got it all figured out.

Of course, contradict to my believe, being a psychologist isn’t as straightforward or easy as I thought it will be. First and foremost, I needed more than just a bachelor degree. My freak-out moments seemed endless. I started to ruminate that pursuing a career in psychology might be the biggest mistake of my life!

Thankfully, I managed to secure a role as a psychologist in a special needs school. (This was back in 2012, now the title would be an associate psychologist). I found my calling. I was on route to gaining amazing experience working with those amazing peeps.

So for the next four years, I juggled work, life, and part-time study. Surviving on coffee and sheer determination were my life, until I finally became a counseling psychologist.

  1. Know Your Path
    • Understanding that the journey to be a psychologist isn’t always straightforward. While a bachelor’s degree in psychology is a great starting point, it’s often just the beginning of a longer pathway. Be prepared to pursue further education, such as a master’s or doctoral degree. Seek out programs that are recognized by professional organizations like the Singapore Psychological Society.

Importantly and necessarily, the Singapore Psychological Society is an excellent resource for information on accredited programs, licensing requirements, and career opportunities in the field. Refer to their website regularly for updates and guidance.
  3. Seek Support
    • Reaching out for support and guidance along your journey is crucial. Don’t, and never hesitate. Whether it’s seeking advice from professors, connecting with fellow psychology students, or seeking mentorship from practicing psychologists. Having a supportive network can make all the difference during uncertain moments.
  4. Embrace Challenges
    • Understanding that the road to be a psychologist will have its challenges. The flip side is for every obstacle you overcome, you will only become stronger and more resilient. Embracing the journey, stay committed to your goals, and trusting your ability to overcome whatever obstacles that may come your way.
  5. Stay Flexible
    • Keeping an open mind and be willing to adapt your plans as you need them. Your career path may not unfold exactly as you envision it, and that’s okay.
